When the Phone Rings
With it’s fine English dubbing and dialogue has to be worth a re-watch. Even as a re-watch I found myself lured back to it rather than watching the new ones.
Spooky in Love – Netflix
A modern remake of the 2011 film Spellbound, it stars Park Eun-bin as Cheon Yeo-ri, heir to one of Korea’s largest luxury hotel chains, who’s been seeing ghosts since a boating accident in college. Yang Se-jong plays Ma Gang-uk, a prosecutor who initially treats her like a murder suspect before realising her ability might solve cases nobody else can crack. The show plays its horror and its romance completely straight against each other while quietly building a mystery around deaths nobody investigated properly the first time.
Our Sticky Love
Our Sticky Love is a new K-drama that pairs Jung Hae-in with Ha-young in a love story that folds memory loss, romance and a bit of crime drama into one package. Showing a bit too much blood and violence for those hoping for a gentle romantic comedy, but it should find a good audience, with fine performances and the ability to binge watch it in one sitting. The Husband – Disney (last episode today)
Neurosurgeon Kang Tae-ju, played by Namkoong Min, and his wife, hospital chairwoman Ko Se-yun (Lee Seol), disagree about divorce, and the very next day, she’s kidnapped. Tae-ju instantly becomes both a fugitive suspected of taking his own wife and the only person actually trying to find her. He gets help from a man whose own wife was taken by the same kidnapper six years earlier.
Worth watching alone for Namkoong Min’s quiet portrayal of a man engulfed in tragedy with seemingly, no way out.
