The WONDERfools is an 8-episode superhero-comedy K-drama streaming on Netflix. Set in 1999 during Y2K doomsday panic.

The series follows a trio of awkward townies in Haeseong City who unexpectedly gain superpowers and must clumsily team up to save their community from sinister forces.

Main Characters

  • Eun Chae-ni (Park Eun-bin): A terminally ill, 27-year-old local “train wreck” with a congenital heart condition who suddenly develops the ability to teleport.
  • Lee Un-jeong (Cha Eun-woo): A mysterious city hall employee who struggles with his own powers and helps train the misfit group.
  • Son Gyeong-hun (Choi Dae-hoon): A hapless local florist who stumbles into superhuman abilities.
  • Kang Ro-bin (Im Seong-jae): Chae-ni’s classmate who becomes part of the chaotic accidental hero trio.

The show has been praised for swapping typical, flawless, charismatic superheroes for highly flawed, bumbling underdogs. It balances quirky, goofy humor with heartfelt emotion and mystery as the team battles villains like Dr. Ha Won-do while trying not to cause mass destruction with their uncontrollable powers.

wonderfools review

The WONDERfools is a delightful, chaotic, and highly entertaining superhero comedy series on Netflix that effectively balances slapstick humour with deep emotional stakes. Directed by Yoo In-sik and set in 1999 during the height of Y2K millennium panic, the 8-episode K-drama follows a group of lovable local misfits who accidentally gain superpowers from toxic waste at a town dump. Critics and audiences widely agree that while the plot relies on familiar superhero tropes, the series is elevated into a “must-watch” by its stellar ensemble chemistry and visual flair.

Park Eun-bin delivers a perennially perky yet layered performance as Eun Chae-ni (“Lady Trainwreck”), a terminally ill woman who acquires teleportation powers. She shares an undeniable, comforting on-screen pull with Cha Eun-woo, who plays Lee Un-jeong, a mysterious city hall employee with a quiet intensity.

The show handles heavy, tragic backstories without letting them ruin the comedy. It pinballs merrily, bit too merrily at times, between laugh-out-loud slapstick absurdity and heart-wrenching emotional depth.

Unlike many high-budget superhero projects that suffer from CGI fatigue, The WONDERfools uses a blend of practical effects and CGI that enhances the action sequences without sacrificing character focus.

It takes a while to take off but by episode 4 it becomes a must watch. Perhaps not one ofr the best of all time list but still a must-see. More Cha Eun-woo would have been good.
